"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

EU Pole Position

Ex-PM of Poland, Jerzy Buzek, has been elected to succeed Hans-Gert Pottering as President of the European Parliament.

Where does his appointment now leave President Lech Kaczyński on full ratification of the Lisbon Treaty? "At the moment there are only two keys [for the European acceptance of the Treaty]: one is in the Federal Republic of Germany, where the German Constitutional Tribunal will decide, the second is the Republic of Ireland.”

“If the Irish accept the Treaty, if it is accepted by the German Constitutional tribunal, [my] signature which is as yet missing, will be there,” he assured.

Perhaps I'm being too cynical when I suggest that the reason for Mr Buzek's appointment is purely to dampen opposition to the treaty in his homeland - but I doubt it.

  2. ;) The EU just rolls on and on, gathering pace - no one seems to have the political will to stop it despite the antipathy of the people. It can't stand, SR, history shows us that.
