"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

The Price Of Propaganda

The figures for government spending on 'communications and marketing' for 2008/09 were amongst those released yesterday and Phil Taylor, an Ealing councillor, has created the above chart. As you can see, spending has rocketed since 2007 to almost £550m as Brown and his cohorts desperately spin what a wonderful job they're doing of running the country.

They warn us about everything from recyling properly to taxing the car and contraception/abortion; from ensuring the lid on the wheelie bin is down properly to telling the DVLA of a change of address and the penalties for benefit cheats. They tell us 'bombs won't go off in this area' because of the presence of CCTV cameras; they tell us how to 'feel British', and, of course, we have hotlines galore!

Since 1997 the cost of telling us what horrible people we are and how to live our lives so as to become better citizens has risen by over £400m. Surely this is one area which Cameron's Conservatives can justifiably slash... and, if not, why not?

  1. Thanks for this.

If you are interested, at 10.30 there is a HoC HoC Culture, Media Committee on Press standards, privacy and libel.

Andy Coulson and (somebody from) News International are appearing before the committee.

Swiss Bob wonders if you'd like a live chat, and I was wondering if you'd be covering it?

  2. Hi WoaR, yes I was going to keep an eye on it and see if there was anything of note. I didn't realise there was a live chat though - I'll pop in. Thanks for letting me know.
