"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

No Glory In This Government

One visionary gleam to be fulfilled was the opening of the new Army Recovery Centre in Edinburgh yesterday. The aim of the Centre is to help injured soldiers as they prepare to return to their units, or await medical discharge from the military.

The 'Inglourious Basterds' of the piece are Brown, Ainsworth, Rammell, the MoD and the DfID. Brown was holidaying just 17 miles away and didn't make arrangements to attend the event. His 'spokesman' said that his visits to injured troops was always a private rather than a media event but that just doesn't wash. Everyone who knows anything about Brown's political background knows that he's never had time for the Armed Forces and that when he was Chancellor to Blair's PM he refused adequate funding for the wars in Iraq and Aghanistan. Brown has a very weak character.

As Afghanistan prepares for the elections on Thursday news is coming in that Karzai has enlisted the help of Mujahadeen warlords such as General Abdul Rashid Dostum who would kill his enemies by strapping them to the tracks of tanks. Karzai has also sold out Afghan women in exchange for the electoral support of fundamentalists with the passing of a law allowing men to deny their wives food if they refuse to obey sexual demands and denying women the right to go out without permission.

Adding insult to injury is the knowledge that we, the taxpayers, are actively funding the Taliban via DfID aid programmes (h/t Old Rightie) and Obama is going down the same road.

One of the richest sources of Taliban funding is the foreign assistance coming into the country.

The strategy for Aghanistan, including defence procurement (Quentin Davies), is in chaos from top to bottom and the consequences are here: Irrigating the desert with British tears. In much the same way that we were led to war in Iraq on a lie (wmd, 45mins) the war in Afghanistan is being 'sold' to the British people on the back of introducing democracy and civil liberties for all, including women. Digging wells, installing fun parks, building schools which remain empty while paying the Taliban for the privilege of working on 'their land' is not the way to go about it.

As for Afghan asylum-seekers in Britain, here's a choice specimen: Illegal immigrant sues us for causing his 'depression'.

There's so much more I could say but this post with all its links is long enough and will probably try the patience of those who read it so, as the Tibetans say, this much for today.
