"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

The UK Border Agency

The Lahore Pipe Band has been refused entry visas and so will be unable to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow at the weekend. Others refused visas were from the Lahore district government, and the Lahore Chamber of Commerce. Lahore has been twinned with Glasgow since 2006. Can't the UK Border Agency get anything right?

  1. Perhaps we shouldn't be twinning our major cities with places in countries which are a hotbed of terrorism & extremists, then this confusion would never arise.

  2. Some of the people have been going for years - either decide something and stick to it or just have a free-for-all. They let every Tom, Dick & Harry Student through so why not the Pipers? Maybe they just don't like the sound of the pipes!

  3. If the English went to the Worlds and played as poorly as the Patalia Pipe Band from Lahore... bodies would be found floating in the Clyde.

  4. :) Agreed Harry - it would probably be seen as a declaration of war if England sent a Pipe Band up there - they'd need SAS bodyguards to have any chance of getting back across the border alive.

  5. One of the purposes of international competitions is to try to foster good will among nations. But guess who it is that always recognises an opportunity to push some agenda? Government? Got it in one.

James, I see your point, but how do things ever get put right if you don't have any contact? For 20 years, Burma has been shunned by the West, sanctions, the lot. Net change in Burma? Sweet F--- All.
