"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Sunday Skyride

On Sunday 15km of London's roads will be closed to cars for The Mayor of London's Skyride which is part of the Tour of Britain and aimed at encouraging people on to their bikes.  Apparently more cyclists would take to the roads if only they weren't scared of the cars so Skyride will give them a taster and help them overcome their fears.  Apparently.  I don't see the logic in letting them have free rein on  empty roads as a way of coming to terms with cars.  They're also going to be allowed to drive the wrong way up one-way streets which sounds more like a measure to reduce cyclist numbers to me.

NB: Blog-lite because I'm antibiotic-heavy, hope to be back to normal soon.

  1. I've found that lately (often) when I'm riding my bike on the main road people (youths in hatchbacks it seems) cut me up and sound their horns.
    It's a jungle...

  2. cyclists ride up one way streets the wrong way anyway - they also run red lights, ride doubled up to have a chat, sit in the middle of the road..

I'd love everyone to cycle - but stick to cycle paths!

oh and then there's the bloody club meetings every weekend in summer, a horde of them blocking the rural roads doing 30 in a 60

  3. Some idiots (youths in hatchbacks?) will always see cyclists as sport. Some cyclists think the Highway Code doesn't apply to them - legally allowing them to go the wrong way up a one way street is just legitimising what they already do.
