"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

It's Over Bar The Shouting

As counting starts in Ireland the exit polls show a similar turnout to last year (about 50%) and a clear 'Yes' to the Lisbon Constitreaty of between 50 & 60%. Take down the bunting & stow away the trestle tables because the weekend's celebrations have been cancelled; the EU mountain has just grown a little higher and a little steeper.

The Poles and Czechs have little incentive to withhold their own ratifications now and Vaclav Klaus will come under renewed pressure to withdraw the challenge to the treaty in the Constitutional Court. Barroso's threat to deny the Czechs an EU Commissioner if they don't fully ratify the treaty gives them another reason to fall into line and, in that event, the Conservatives will not give the promised referendum here in Britain.

In other news, Marek Edelman has died.

  2. Such a shame so many Irish accepted the lies told to them. It makes me more determined that an independent Scotland should not apply to be a full member of this corrupt set-up but be friends through the Council of Europe.

  3. Norway signed up to something similar SR but they're in deeper than they wanted to be. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, not even Tierra del Fuego :(
