"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Going Down

David Wilshire MP (Con, Spelthorne) says the "witch hunt" against MPs will undermine democracy.  I think he'll find that it isn't the 'witch hunt' to blame but the actions of some MPs taking advantage of a system which they drew up and policed themselves via the Fees Office.  He announced his resignation last month after it was discovered he had paid £105k in fees to a business owned by himself and his girlfriend.

In an attempt to absolve himself of wrong-doing he wrote to his constituents using phrases like: with a heavy heart, in accord with the rules, let you down, devastated, entitled to explain etc, so we can see the direction his letter was taking - laying the ground for the same grudging, self-justifying apology that Smith and McNulty have already  used.

Wilshire, however, has gone one step further.  He compares the treatment of MPs to Jews in the Holocaust. I can only assume the stupid, insensitive man had a brainstorm.

MPs "living off rations":

UPDATENow Cameron's on his case.
