"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Britain: A True Friend To Iceland

Britain threatens to freeze Iceland out of EU... The headline goes on: "...as loan payback vetoed." Closer reading reveals that the loan repayments haven't been vetoed but the schedule of repayments is in dispute. The bullying can only escalate the problem - much as putting Iceland on the list of terrorist countries did.

Many Icelandic people don't want to be a full member of the EU in any event; if anything they'd rather go the way of Norway or Switzerland so I doubt this threat from the UK govt will have much impact, unless it's to strengthen Icelandic resolve. Some people do have a backbone you know, Gordon. You've bullied the British for so long you think all people can be steam-rollered and treated with contempt but not all people are as tolerant or as ... (insert your own adjective) as the British.

Here's an interesting perspective on the problems from an Icelander: Time to Think, a link I picked up at Dreadnoughts

  1. :-) Sometimes it's wrong to be so tolerant; sometimes tolerance means nothing more than being a punch-bag.
