"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Update: Boycotting The Co-op

Who remembers the story of Sapper Anthony Walls who was refused service by a branch of the Co-op because he was in uniform?

This is the response I, and no doubt thousands of others, have received:
Dear xxxxxxxx

Thank you for contacting us regarding the article you have read recently in the press.

Please be assured that the decision not to serve Lance Corporal Walls, was a genuine mistake on the part of our two members of staff. We very much regret the upset this matter has caused and have apologised to him.

I can confirm that we do not have a policy that states when wearing uniform, members of the armed forces should not be served alcohol.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to write and if I can provide you with any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Yours sincerely

Yvonne Hulmes

It doesn't really answer the question of what happened to the two staff members - I suggested re-training and supervised shelf-stacking but Head Office probably thought that was too harsh a punishment.
