"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

A Shopping List

One of the great things about blogging from abroad has been having a broad overview of what's going on and tying the ends together to get at the bigger picture, particularly as it affects Britain. One of the things to emerge is that Britain isn't a victim country in all this; it's one of the prime movers and shakers. It will be interesting, for me at least, to see if/how the perspective of the blog changes once I'm back on home turf.

Lately, all my time has been taken up in organising the move so I haven't had as much time to devote to the blog as it needs or I'd like - hence the number of mini-round-ups has grown - and today is no exception.

Double standards, double-speak:

There will be NO referendum
Despite a pledge to hold a referendum on any new treaty, the deal could be pushed through next year without a public vote.
Mr Cameron has pledged a ‘referendum lock’ which would require ministers to hold a referendum on any new EU treaty which affects Britain.  But Government sources say proposed treaty changes would not transfer powers from Britain to the EU, so no poll is needed.
EU's trade deal with India
Under the terms of the deal, Indian companies could transfer staff to the UK with no limit on numbers and no guarantee that the jobs would first be offered to homegrown experts.
CCTV in Muslim areas to be dismantled
In a statement, Sims said: "I believe that the support and the confidence of local communities in West Midlands police is the most important thing for us in the fight against crime and terrorism.
"We can fight crime and the threat posed by terrorism far more effectively by working hand in hand with local people, rather than alienating them through a technological solution which does not have broad community support."

My shopping list? Here it is, so far:

  2. Indyanhat :-) Remember: "My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."

An American senator said that in the 19thC and I don't see that the sentiment has altered since then.
