"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Cameron hints at 2011 troop withdrawal from Afghanistan; LibDem MP Norman Baker hints he will resign over tuition fees and I hint that I've entered the Miss World competition. I also hint that I think the majority of the electorate vote for MPs because of their Party's manifesto pledges and policies, not because they want someone to re-interpret their views and misrepresent them in Parliament.

More hints:

Ken Clarke hints that he's a liar by not only backing down on the pledge to toughen up on knife crime but also introducing changes whereby 'thousands' of prisoners could avoid court and prison.

See also: Pagan prisoners have time off to worship a Sun God and the term 'offenders' is offensive.

The OBR says the euro could be at risk of collapse. "Monetary arrangements come and monetary arrangements go."

The Committee on Climate Change (members HERE) is an independent advisory body set up by the previous government under the terms of the Climate Change Act.  In a report out today it recommends the government cut carbon emissions by 60% over the next twenty years.

1000 foreign nationals have a pass for the House of Commons. A vetting system seems to be non-existent.

BBC interviews 'LibDem MP' who was a Yorkshire builder:

In brief:

UK below Estonia & Slovenia in OECD league table
Forced back to work at gunpoint
Wikileaks Swiss bank taken down by hackers
Single European dialling code considered

And, finally, ROFPML.

*STOP PRESS*   Assange is arrested and expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court late today. More: Assange handed himself in.

  1. Dismal situations except for your Miss World entry, GV!

  2. I'm ironing my monokini in anticipation as we speak, OR. Good word, 'dismal' - rhymes with abysmal :-)

  3. "People who have committed offences are not offenders they are people who have done things"
Trite drivel, how about Crook, or Criminal or Inmate or just plain scumbag?

Excellent news about Swiss Post Bank; dunno how it's done but my understanding is that DOSS attacks need no particular sophistication.

The answer to my film question is The Client, Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarondon, Brad Renfrew, 1994

  4. That rings a bell - I think I might have seen it a few years ago, but it obviously didn't make much of an impression on me. There are very few films where I can quote whole chunks, in fact there are none. The best I can do is: "You know how to whistle don't you Steve? You just puts your lips together and... blow."

'Scumbag' would have been my first suggestion too :-) There are far too many independent advisory bodies, committees, steering groups, institutes, think tanks etc telling govt what to do. The electorate don't get a look-in.
