"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Theme Park Parliament

It had to happen eventually, I suppose. After a thousand years of history our Houses of Parliament have descended to a new level which acknowledges their true place in our 'democracy'.

Any individual or company with £25,000 to spare can now hire Westminster Hall for their evening shindig. Other money-making considerations also include tours of the Commons' valuable art collection.
They are also proposing opening a high street store selling Commons souvenirs, offering cream teas on the Thames-side terrace and increasing the number of wedding receptions held in its historic precincts.
Apparently, these measures are aimed at off-setting the losses incurred by the Catering Dept but, surely, the answer to that is for MPs to pay the going rate and withdraw the subsidies to the nine cafes, five dining rooms and three bars which they currently enjoy.

On the other hand, perhaps they have it right. They've already sold off our sovereignty so what's the problem with a few souvenirs, just for old time's sake.
