"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

This, That & The Other

Despite three cups of coffee the cobwebs won't leave me this morning so, even though there's quite a bit going on, I'll leave it to you to decide what's of interest. The politicians are still howling for Murdoch, though I don't suppose he cares much. It looks as though he planned to concentrate on digital formats and tv stations anyway so don't be surprised if he sells off The Sun and the Times Group. Yesterday in the Chamber MPs were quick to condemn, not only the NotW, but also the Express, the Daily Mail and the Star - you've been warned. They've got the bit between their teeth and it's vilify the media and private investigators time. The only people they're not looking to is themselves.

Of course, they're so "passionate" about it because the whole country is up in arms about it, apparently. This faux concern for the sensibilities of the British people is too much; it's hypocrisy.

Only the outcome matters. If the govt goes ahead with regulation we could end up with a continental-type press where reporting of politicians' misdemeanors is out of bounds and the DT's publishing of crooked MPs' expenses certainly wouldn't have landed on our breakfast tables. We could end up with a newspaper-reading public that is even less well-informed than it is now - and that doesn't bear thinking about.

Try these:

The fight is on: Who will pay for the all unsustainable debt - creditors or taxpayers?
10,000 Iraqi Revolutionary Guards storm Kurdish villages
There'll be no domestic reform while we remain in the EU
Cabinet Office says it will release papers if Brown agrees
Fear of failing stress test causes German bank to pull out
Boy makes throwaway remark about dogxxxx and ends up beaten & in jail (NY)
The rehabilitation of David Laws continues after cheating on his expenses
We don't love the EU enough so it should be marketed just like Coke or Pepsi
I like this: man wins religious right to wear a sieve on his head

Finally, footage from Japan's tsunami, showing how quickly it creeps up on you:
