"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

"The EU As An Idea Is Disintegrating"

It's been another busy day in paradise as the EU seems to be falling to pieces, from the euro-zone to discontent with immigration, from the 30% reduction in CO2 levels (failed) to the 'Citizens' Initiative'.

Denmark is the latest country to speak out and it intends to implement stricter border controls. The Danish Parliament has upset the European Commission & Parliament by voting in favour of permanent new legislation. It will mean more security checkpoints at the country's ports and at its border with Germany. Some EU officials have already condemned the move, saying it will contradict the Schengen open border agreement.

Soren Espersen from the Danish People's Party, who have been pushing for these stricter immigration laws, says Europe has to face up to its problems with integration. UPDATE: German call to boycott Denmark

In other news, a Romanian MEP has been accused of embezzling 40,000 euros
Marin [a locally-hired Assistant to MEP Corneliu Vadim Tudor] claims that he was stunned to find out in June, while trying to get a loan from a Romanian bank, that his signature was forged on three working contracts and that he was supposed to pay taxes for some €40,000 that he supposedly cashed in since 2009.

After filing a criminal complaint with the Romanian police for forgery and embezzlement, the assistant is asking the European Parliament to send him any documents proving that he was hired or fired as a local assistant.

Tudor retorted violently in a phoned-in tv intervention on Monday night, calling Marin "a stupid moron" whom he helped because his father used to be a "decent spy".
Marin then went on to say: "I would strangle him with this hand, which supposedly forged his signature," and he said it was a "politically motivated" affair.

This is an MEP speaking - I suppose he's just one of those occasional 'bad apples' one hears about.  It's time the whole thing was wound up and all the MEPs and their handlers, with a few honourable exceptions, should be thrown in the nearest river.
