"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Italy's Finance Minister, Giulio Tremonti, emerged from today's "fruitful" talks with Jean-Claude Juncker and said: We will continue our meditation or it might have been medication - either of those are probably the best options they've got of rescuing the euro-zone.

Barroso has been fretting that 'the markets just don't understand us' and Berlusconi's speech appears to have gone down like the proverbial lead balloon.  A German government spokesman also chimed in with: "There is no cause to fret."

You have to hand it to them, when it comes to self-delusion, no-one does it better than a eurocrat. Happy Days!
