"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

A German-run NHS

That's not such a far-fetched proposition. Despite yesterday's denials by Lansley that the NHS would be privatised and his claim that the talk was just "ludicrous scaremongering", ("We will not allow these lies to block the progress we want to achieve for patients.") the fact is that he's being economical with the truth.

Under EU Competition laws the government's plan to farm out the management of NHS Trusts must be advertised for tender throughout the EU and offered first in the Official Journal of the European Union. Any man and his dachshund or poodle can submit a bid - as we saw with Siemens and Bombardier.

Who knows? Maybe a German company will make a better fist of managing the NHS than any government but to expect a private company not to do it for profit and for Lansley to say it isn't privatisation is nonsense. Most of our infrastructure and energy companies are now foreign-owned anyway so what's a hospital more or less.
