"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Google Totally F*cks Up Blogger

Google Totally F*cks up Blogger: with fixes
Thanks to Spidey for this one.

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I had wondered why I was suddenly unable to post comments on the Telegraph site and Blazing Cat Fur. I've followed Spidey's advice and the coding fix works a treat, and I am once again able to comment elsewhere. So, don't feel apprehensive about copying and pasting the code.

Blogger's shift to a country specific domain address completely passed me by, as I cannot recall seeing it being publicised anywhere. As for the new template that it intends to introduce from tomorrow, beware! I have tested the new look and find it generally inferior to what is in place now, other than the fact that page views for every article are now displayed, which is quite useful.

Talking of unwelcome developments, one source states that Labour supporters in Bradford West required a police escort following threats from Galloway's supporters, and there are allegations of serious postal vote fraud which the Daily Telegraph is said to be investigating. See here: http://durotrigan.blogspot.com/2012/03/alleged-fraud-and-intimidation-in.html

  2. I missed it too, D. I'm considering migrating the whole thing to Wordpress - I started a back-up over there when blogger was down for a cple of days a while back but it will be such a chore to re-do my blogrolls and other links that I'm putting it off.

Voting fraud? In Bradford? Who'dathunkit ;) I saw a post over at Quiet Man's place yesterday - a pic of the guy who threw eggs at Galloway being set on by G's supporters. I'm happy to just let things settle & see what happens - it will really get interesting if Livingstone performs well in May's London Mayoralty race. Then it would be 'all bets off'.

  3. I've just been checking - I can't get your blog or Spidey's from my blog roll - "Error 503: Service unavailable". Great!

    1. Really? That's strange. My traffic has fallen off a cliff this afternoon although blogger is showing hundreds of phantom hits every hour on the article I've posted a link to here. It seems that there have been more than 2,000 of these phantom visits since 10am today, but nothing is showing up on Feedjit, Sitemeter or 'Who's.amung.us'. I don't know what's going on. I'll try accessing Spidey's blog from your blog roll and see what happens.

  4. I don't know what's going on with Blogger - I can't do one-stop editing any more, I can't delete or edit my own comments - mess.

I just wanted to add that I did a google search for both your blogs - they showed up but wouldn't connect. Got same "Error..." message.

  5. Hi, GV, thanks for spreading the word. I've got a Wordpress backup of my blog but that's all I use it for because, although it's close, (but no cigar), I can't get it to look the same as the Blogger version and everything about it is far more bother than it's worth - apart from the fact that it's easy to import all my posts from Blogger.

What I've done is to buy a custom domain from Google - http://support.google.com/blogger/bin/static.py?hl=en&ts=1233381&page=ts.cs - they migrate everything for you and it only costs about $12 a year. If I'd known it was so cheap and easy I'd have done it ages ago. ;-)

  6. I've just clicked on the link in your blogroll and it seems to now be redirecting to my custom domain, GV - they said it would take a bit of time to get everything redirecting and working properly and I only actually set it all up around six o'clock this morning.

  7. Thanks Spidey - the blog link is working now and the new link is up on google search - underneath your old one. The blog below is having problems with Blogger too -

    http://grahnlaw.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/migrating-from-blogger-temporarily.html

I'm still having probs with yours, Durotrigan. There has to be something at Blogger's end causing all these problems with different sites. Their latest changeover isn't going too well.

I'll keep the link to the google custom domain thingy - just in case, but it's still 'google' who are part of the problem.

    1. I've just had a text from a friend GV stating that neither he nor someone else he knows are able to access my blog, except via an "iphone on 3" if that means anything. I'm wondering whether I should get rid of the code fix, but then again, without it I am unable to post comments elsewhere. It's perplexing and frustrating. Meanwhile I've clocked up about 2,300 phantom hits since late this morning. Does anyone have any suggestions as to possible remedies?

I'll see if I can access the other blog you mention.

  8. This is disturbing to me because it sounds like American blogger is being isolated from that of the rest of the world (as far as we know it's only the UK and Canada, but who's to say it's not global?). All the better to cut off American bloggers from the rest of the world if TSHTF? Very worrying.

BTW, Spider, I didn't see any option at all to leave a comment on your post/blog. Is it because they're shut off or a part of this problem.

My blog's url is still blogspot.com. I wonder if it redirects from the UK or Canada to something else?

  10. Oh! sorry for the double post! When I posted the comment it redirects to a 404 error message saying that it was "not found on this server." What a mess.

    And why!?

  11. It looks as though we're back in business - I can now post properly and reply to comments. Fingers crossed. Have you changed over yet, Fuzzy? It seems to take a cple of days to settle down.

    1. Yes, I'm pretty much done now, just working still on my blog roll. Speaking of which, what is your new site's url so I can add it there, too? Mine's http://fuzislippers.wordpress.com/ so come and check it out :)

    2. D'oh, nevermind, I've figured it out.

  12. Hi Fuzzy, I've been over to have a look - it's looking good but I know what you mean about WP and their blogrolls and other links - I found it a bit of a nightmare which is why it's still just a back-up and not the main blog!

  13. Worrying GV. Just noticed my URL has changed too and asked Spidey if I need to put the HTML into the header so as folks can read it from anywhere.
