"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

There's a call to ban E-cigarettes - the ones that help smokers either quit completely or remove the alleged effects of passive smoking and also lessen the burden on the NHS as a result of inhaling the toxic substances inherent in normal cigarettes. Why? The only answer can be tobacco lobbying groups because these innocuous cigarettes have helped thousands quit the habit.

As I walked down the local High Street today I passed two young girls, one of whom paused to actually light up a cigarette, in public. The only thing that stopped me patting her on the back was my upbringing - nice girls don't eat and drink in public places and they certainly do not smoke in public, not even in moving cars where I come from (1960s Yorkshire). The young girl looked perfectly respectable in every other way, from her clothes to her speech, and I reflect now and admire her defiance of current prohibition on public manners.

It's just gone too far and we're becoming a Puritan nation again. The most awful aspect of this is the third-party offence whereby two people can interact but a third onlooker can take offence and report it as a crime; it's the most stupid law ever introduced in this country and needs to be repealed as soon as possible if we are ever to make progress again. There is always and will always be someone ready to take offence at a word or an action of someone else, whether it's online or face-to-face. It's just ludicrous and we should stop legal facilitation of such self-indulgence.

On another topic it was reported today that forty-eight more people are added to Great Britain's population each and every hour via births and immigration. It was also reported that the majority of births are to immigrant mothers. What the reports didn't say was that the figures apply to England - they cloak it with terms like 'UK'. This has to stop. We've finally reached the point of having a choice between repatriation now or civil war in the future.

In the meantime we're being told to cut down on our energy (cooking/heating) and water usage; the NHS and state schools can't cope; sell your old stuff and buy second-hand; eat this, don't eat that; recycle this, compost that, eat out-of-date food and we won't send it to a Chinese landfill; we're here to help. No! They're not here to help. We have a clear sixteen years' evidence that they're here to screw us up and we've been suckered and deceived. Don't get me started on the unnecessarily bloated welfare state and don't vote for the LibLabCon con.

If you can't see that this is happening across the so-called 'West' then your eyes aren't open. For West read Australia, Canada, USA, Europe (the continent as was) and Great Britain & Northern Ireland. Look at the UN, look at Agenda21 and then ask questions of your local authority.

This is my last post - I've really had enough. Please make a note of all the good blogs in the sidebar - Captain Ranty, Fausty, Subrosa, OldRightie, Witterings, Incoming, Ambush Predator, Bucko and so on, and all the 'Essential Links', because I'll be closing the blog next week and they'll no longer be accessible. My thanks to all of you for reading over the years - here's a tip: carry the torch, rant on and don't end up like me.

  1. Don't get me started on the "Out of date food" bollox, In the 80s, I was eating ration packs that were older than I was (Stuff dated mid to late 50s).

Only this week, I opened and ate a tin of black pepper spam dated 09, and there's been spam dated from the war that had been found fairly recently in civil defence stores that was as edible as the day it was packed.

We regularly get frozen meat from the mother in law that is out of date, she's of the opinion that food is quite alright up to the stroke of midnight on the use by date, and at one second passed it turns into something akin to toxic waste.

    1. Hi Budvar, I think people can make up their own minds as to whether something is still edible or not - what I object to is these people telling us to do something they wouldn't dream of doing themselves. Can you imagine Lord de Mauley eating out-of-date food, or buying second-hand goods on eBay as he's advised us to do?

  2. Hi Sue,

Can't say I blame you. I've tried to quit three times. It is very, very, very frustrating.

I can say I will miss you, and your writing. Please keep in touch.

    Stay safe, and stay well,

  3. Sad to see you apparently give in - never thought I would see that day.

    Stay in touch, please?

Thanks for the re-awakening of my mind to the music you so clearly adore.
Thanks for your story of your journey to that little piece of heaven that is Devon.
Thanks for the rants that have educated me about the reality we live in.
You will be greatly missed, is there nothing we can say to change your mind?
Enjoy whatever it is you wish for yourself.

  5. So sorry to see you go, but understand completely. I've been near that brink a few times and am still teetering on the edge.

Your thought-provoking posts will be missed. Will you be continuing your gardening blog?

Best of luck to you, GV.

    Thanks for the mention, BTW.

  6. Enjoy your time Susan. I'm quite sure You've been appreciated by many more than have ever let on.

  7. Well this blog is "still accessible" today, so I'll just add my thanks for your efforts, and wish you well. I know how you feel...
